Reflection1 Role of Technology and Media
This topic was the first thing we covered in class. I have had experience in information technology through secondary and tertiary education however, I was a bit flustered as to what we were going to cover in this topic. We started by going through the course outline and first we defined the following:
1. Blogs
2. Mind Maps
3. Wordle
4. Prezi
5. Podcasts
6. Videos
After defining these terms the lecturer proceeded to introduce the topic which was the role of Technology and Media in Education. Educational Technology was defined as things which enhance and make learning easier. Media was defined as the communication of information in any way. We later learned that there were 6 categories of Media which are:
1. Videos
2. Images
3. Text
4. People
5. Audio
6. Tactile Manipulative objects
We then looked at technology and how it has evolved and categorized various materials and devices to see whether they were old or new technology. We also looked at how they were used or are being used. For example CD's, DVD's, Cassettes, Floppy Disks and Candles.
Of all that we covered, I think that the greatest problem that I encountered was explaining the 6 categories of media and categorizing the paperclip i had into new or old technology. However, with some help from other colleagues, I was able to provide some examples for the 6 categories and using examples given by the teacher, I was able to identify that the model of paperclip I had was new technology as compared to older models.
From my experience of the course content, I would say that I pretty much learned about Technology's evolution throughout the centuries and how to better explain the 6 categories of media.
I think that I could integrate or categorize Blogs, Mind Maps, Wordle, Prezi, Podcasts and Videos with the different types of media to attack the different learning styles within my classroom to better enable learning.
